Arjun Ram Meghwal, a retired IAS official, later served as the District Magistrate (Collector) in the Government of Rajasthan before being elected to the House of Representatives. Less than a year after the Arunachal Pradesh MP was given the cabinet portfolio, Arjun Ram Meghwal replaced Kiren Rijiju and assumed the position of Minister of State for Law and Justice. According to a press release from Rastrapati Bhavan, Meghwal will continue to maintain his current positions as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of State for Culture.
Meghwal, a retired IAS official who joined the administrative services and later served as the District Magistrate (Collector) in the Government of Rajasthan, is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Bikaner, Rajasthan. Meghwal is a well-known Scheduled Caste leader and a three-term member of parliament. He did not, however, previously occupy a ministerial level.
Arjun Ram Meghwal was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Bikaner seat in 2009. Then, in the general election of 2014, he won reelection. During his second term, he was chosen to serve as the BJP’s lower house top whip. He was also put forth by the Lok Sabha Speaker for the position of House Committee Chairman.
In May 2019, he was appointed to the position of minister of state for parliamentary affairs, heavy industry, and public enterprises. In the background of Rijiju’s repeated run-ins with the Indian legal system is Meghwal’s appointment to the independent charge as Minister of State in the law ministry. President Droupadi Murmu reassigned the portfolios among the ministers, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice, according to a statement released by Rashtrapati Bhavan.
