Heirs from Political Dynasties: Sulabha Gaikwad

Sulabha and her Constituency

Sulabha Ganpat Gaikwad is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician from Maharashtra who currently represents the Kalyan East constituency in the state legislative assembly. She came into the political spotlight during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections when the BJP fielded her in place of her husband, Ganpat Kalu Gaikwad, the sitting MLA who could not contest due to legal troubles.

Sulabha and Resistance from Shiv Sena

Despite facing resistance from sections of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which demanded that her candidature be withdrawn, Sulabha Gaikwad went ahead with the campaign and ultimately secured a decisive victory. She won the Kalyan East seat with over 81,000 votes, defeating her nearest rival, Mahesh Dashrath Gaikwad, by a margin of more than 26,000 votes.

In recent months, Sulabha Gaikwad has remained active in local issues and was in the news in Junes 2025 for handing over compensation cheques of ₹5 lakh each to the families of six people who lost their lives in a building slab collapse in Kalyan East.

Her presence at the event was seen as an attempt to stand close to the community and address immediate civic concerns, something crucial in an urban constituency like Kalyan.

Her rise to prominence has been shaped both by personal circumstances and political dynamics, but her work since being elected suggests that she is trying to establish herself independently in the local political landscape.

About Sulabha Gaikwad

Sulabha Gaikwad, an MLA, Kalyan East, Thane district. She contested in the 2024 Election, with the BJP government, and won her first ever election. She is the wife of Ganpat Kalu Gaikwad, a three time sitting MLA. The most surprising part is that he could not contest election, as he is involved in a criminal case.

She had only studied till Class 7, from Mahatma Gandhi Vidya Mandir, Dombivli, Thane. Though her formal education ended after Class 5, her entry into politics marked her as one of the few women representatives from the region. This was especially significant given the circumstances of her candidacy.

She defeated her rival Mahesh Gaikwad, by a margin of 26,408 votes. Mahesh Gaikwad is the same person who was shot by her husband.
