What Is A Forest?: How Govt Defines It, What Supreme Court Suggests

Snehashish RoyFebruary 21, 20240

The Supreme Court of India has issued a directive to the government, instructing it to follow the broad and all-encompassing definition of forest as laid down in its 1996 judgment in the T N Godavarman case. This directive will remain in effect until a consolidated record of all types of forests across the country has been prepared. The directive was issued by a three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, on Monday, February 19, in response to petitions challenging the 2023 amendments to the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 (FCA). These amendments were being challenged on the grounds that they had substantially diluted the definition of forest and reduced the scope of the FCA. The government had passed the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Bill, 2023, in ...

Country’s First UCC Bill Tabled: To Live-In Or Not To Live-In? Understanding Its Constitutional Challenge

Snehashish RoyFebruary 7, 20240

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was introduced in the Uttarakhand Assembly on Tuesday, which has raised concerns about privacy and personal liberty. The Bill looks to equate heterosexual live-in relationships to the status of marriage. The proposed Code defines live-in relationships as a “relationship between a man and a woman” who “cohabit in a shared household through a relationship like marriage, provided that such relations are not prohibited.” The Bill requires partners to notify the “Registrar” within a month of entering into a live-in relationship or terminating one. A jail term of up to three months is prescribed for not registering a live-in relationship. In case of failing to produce a certificate of live-in relationship, a term of six months is prescribed on conviction....

Nitish Kumar’s Split From INDIA Bloc Dampens Opposition’s Caste Pitch, Revamps ‘Hindutva’ Tone

Snehashish RoyJanuary 29, 20240

Nitish Kumar's return to the NDA just before the Lok Sabha elections has significant implications for the BJP. As the mastermind behind Bihar's caste survey, he provided the blueprint for the Opposition's caste census call and social justice pitch against the BJP in 2024. Nitish also chaired the first meeting of the Opposition (INDIA) bloc in Patna in June 2023. This move not only gives the NDA a possible bump in Bihar's tally but also challenges the Opposition's strategy of countering Hindutva with social justice. This strategy has been the political commonsense of the Opposition since the early 1990s when an alliance of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati prevented the BJP from coming to power in 1993 in UP. Nitish's crossing comes soon after Karpoori Thakur was awarded the Bharat Ratna,...

Snehashish RoyJanuary 25, 20240

The Opposition INDIA alliance is falling apart in West Bengal, where the Left parties have been opposing the TMC for a long time. This is because Mamata Banerjee, the TMC chief and the state’s Chief Minister, has announced that her party will go solo in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, leaving the Congress behind. The relationship between the TMC and the state Congress unit has been sour and bitter for years, especially between Mamata and the state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who are also the CM and the Leader of the Lok Sabha respectively. They have been hostile to each other for decades. Mamata, who is 69 years old and has been the CM three times, left the Congress and formed the TMC on January 1, 1998. Snehashish RoySeptember 28, 20220

State police and federal law enforcement agencies now have the authority to detain organisation members, freeze their accounts, and even seize their property. Urban Governance: The Area Where India Lags Most

Snehashish RoySeptember 16, 20220

The fact that Bengaluru lacks an elected government significantly worsened the issue as the city experienced severe flooding over the previous week. The state government presently appoints bureaucrats to oversee the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike council because the tenure of the previous elected council ended in 2020. One of the major cities in the globe is Bengaluru. More than eight million people live in the Greater Bengaluru region, which is comparable to the population of Switzerland. The fact that it lacks an elected government is, to put it simply, astonishing and highlights what is likely India's worst governance weakness: a lacklustre, essentially nonexistent autonomous urban governance. What's visible in urban governance? India has 675 million urban residents. This f...

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) system in India celebrated its fifth anniversary on July 1. The largest shift to India's fiscal framework since Independence was unquestionably introduced in 2017. By agreeing to jointly charge taxes on both commodities and services, states and the Union consolidated a wide range of indirect taxes under one broad guise. Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Muri’ Politics Over Fight Against GST Hike

Snehashish RoyJuly 22, 20220

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, is quite upset about the application of the GST on puffed rice. On July 21, when speaking at her party's annual Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata, she pulled some 'muri' (puffed rice) from her purse and summoned a vendor to the stage to make a furious point about the taxation of the food item. The typical 'muri' In the streets of Kolkata and other state cities and towns, in markets, and in the local trains that connect the suburbs with the state's capital, it's difficult to miss the 'muri' — known as 'murmura' in northern and western India — vendors. Watch Out For Boris: Change In UK’s Leadership Has No Bearing On International Politics

Sayani ChakrabortyJuly 8, 20220

Following a slew of controversies, Boris' own party eventually decided it had had enough of all the loud theatre and decided to skip the performance. Boris Johnson stepped down as thr Prime Minister of the UK and leader of the Conservative Party yesterday, following in the footsteps of many other prominent cabinet members who had already quit. His party will now vote for a new leader, and the country will perhaps look forward to more policy stability about important problems. A change in leadership in the United Kingdom, however, is both interesting and of little relevance given the country's little impact on the political landscape of the rest of the world. It is a fascinating morality tale that has ramifications for other democracies to see how a leader who led his party to its...
