Polio Emergency US: Should It Worry India?; Read Here!

Pooja YadavOctober 21, 20220

When poliovirus was found in wastewater samples from three counties earlier in September, New York declared a State disaster emergency. This year, the environmental surveillance of sewage samples from Kolkata in India revealed the presence of vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV), however, the Health Ministry noted that this might happen in any nation where oral polio vaccinations (OPVs) are administered. The Global Polio Eradication Drive has now identified 30 nations where either imported wild or vaccine-derived poliovirus or circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) has been detected. Arpita SarkarAugust 2, 20220

The World Health Organization (WHO), along with other global partners including UNAIDS and UNICEF, announced on Tuesday that only half (52%) of children with HIV are on life-saving treatment worldwide. According to the UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2022 released recently, this figure among children lags behind that of adults where three quarters (76%) are taking antiretrovirals. WHO said, "Concerned by the stalling of progress for children, and the widening gap between children and adults, UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO and partners have brought together a global alliance to ensure that no child living with HIV is denied treatment by the end of the decade and to prevent new infant HIV infections." The leaders at the International AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada announced the new Global Alli...

A deadly outbreak of an unidentified disease in Tanzania has been recognised as leptospirosis, health officials said. More than 20 cases, including three dyings, have been reported in the southern Lindi region, with patients depicting signs similar to Ebola or Marburg virus infections -- bleeding, especially from the nose, fever, headache and fatigue, according to health officials. Introductory results from laboratory testing earlier this month had ruled out Ebola and Marburg viruses as well as COVID-19, causing the disease a mystery.  Tanzanian Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu reported at a press conference Monday that the samples from patients tested positive for leptospirosis, a transmittable bacterial infection that impacts both humans and animals. The first case of the previously
