An increased risk of dementia has long been associated with depression, and now a new study provides evidence that, in some patient populations, prompt treatment of depression can reduce the risk of dementia. More than 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, a disabling neurocognitive condition that predominantly affects older adults. There is no effective treatment for dementia but identifying ways to reduce or prevent dementia will help reduce the burden of the disease.
