Data Shows Indian Parents Sidestepping CBSE, Choosing Foreign School Boards; Check Out Reasons!

Arpita SarkarSeptember 21, 20220

Undeterred by hefty fees, parents in India are choosing schools affiliated with foreign boards with the hope that their children will not only receive an "international standard" of education but also a better chance of getting into a university abroad. Data shows that in the last few years, the Switzerland-headquartered International Baccalaureate (IB) and the UK's Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) have witnessed significant growth in popularity in India. The IB Board issued a statement, saying, "In India, we have been delighted to witness a steady growth of schools delivering one or more IB programmes to students; we currently have 204 IB World Schools and 338 authorised programmes in India. Our flagship programme, the Diploma Programme (DP), is the programme ...

Neither Hijab Nor Saffron Shawls Allowed: Karnataka Government Tells Supreme Court

Arpita SarkarSeptember 21, 20220

The Karnataka government told the Supreme Court that the dress code was issued in February last year to maintain the 'secular character' of educational institutions and not from a religious point of view. Hearing the hijab-controversy case, the government on Tuesday told the apex court that not only hijab but also saffron shawls have been banned in government and government-aided educational institutions in Karnataka. Central Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of the Karnataka government in a bench of Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia. He said that cases against the dress code have been deliberately filed with the help of the extremist organization 'Popular Front of India' (PFI). He also claimed that there was no unrest in Karnataka over any demand for the...

According to data from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for seven years - from 2012-13 to 2019-20, the number of foreign students in India has increased from 34,774 in 2012-13 to 49,348 in 2019-20. States Compete For Industrial Investment, Just Handful Emerge As Victorious

Sayani ChakrabortySeptember 15, 20220

There have been loud political battles in Mumbai since Maharashtra lost the Rs 1.54 lakh crore Vedanta-Foxconn semiconductor project to Gujarat. This, however, is smart politics. Such politics puts pressure on state governments to actively pursue private investment. Having employment, investment, and living standards become regular top-list concerns in party debates and voter attention will be even better for the political system. The PM's remarks sparked a national discussion over rival promises of freebies, which is the worst type of politics because, if freebies dominate policy thought in the present, the future would necessarily be dark. The good news is that certain governments are competing for high-stakes international investment despite freebie politics, and they are doing s...

Understanding Complicity Between Colonial State And Subaltern Class

Sayani ChakrabortySeptember 12, 20220

In studies of the experiences of India's poor and disenfranchised in the modern era, historians have often portrayed subalterns and the colonial state as antagonistic. Historians affiliated with the Subaltern Studies Collective were correct in their assessment that subaltern awareness existed outside from or in opposition to colonial modernity and its different institutions. They believed that genuine opposition to western social and political patterns originated in a separate subaltern domain that was unfettered by the colonial authority. That's why they zeroed in on the most spectacular instances of peasant uprising against the zamindar, sahukar and sarkar complex. The subaltern became a symbol of resistance in their hands. However, the history of colonial India is rife with examp...
