Poor Air Quality Is A Nationwide Problem With No State-Specific Solutions

Sayani ChakrabortyDecember 12, 20220

There is a common misconception that India's air pollution problem is limited to the seven states spanning from Punjab in the northwest to West Bengal in the southeast, which make up the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) airshed. This was debunked by the report. Recent air quality index values in Mumbai and Chennai, two coastal metros, were worse than those in Delhi. All in all, it's a worrying situation. Of the 50 most polluted cities in the world, 35 are in India, according to the latest World Air Quality Report. The negative impacts of poor air quality on public health are widespread. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, air pollution was responsible for 18% of fatalities in India in 2019. The cost to the economy was 1.36 percent of GDP. Within India, the poorest states ...

Centre Enacts New Regulations In An Effort To Reduce Air Pollution

Sayani ChakrabortyNovember 4, 20220

The Union government has implemented the fourth stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat the pollution, with the air quality in Delhi continuing in the "severe" category and climatic conditions anticipated to worsen it further in the coming days. SAFAR reports that on November 3rd, 34% of the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels in Delhi were caused by stubble fires. PM2.5 is an atmospheric pollutant released during construction and fossil fuel burning. This is the highest level we've seen all year. However, that's not the end of the bad news; the forecast for the following few days is bleak as well. The government's air quality warning systems have issued a "serious" alert, and it's expected to last until November 5. Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) remained...

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 4 million people die every year from pneumonia and other diseases caused by indoor air pollution. The report said, "A number of studies indicate that reducing emissions from household cooking and heating may be required to substantially improve ambient air quality in some parts of Asia and the Pacific." Environmental air pollution and indoor air pollution are linked to each other as people spend about 90% of their time indoors. According to the State of Global Air Report 2019, in In...

Dealing With Particle Contamination Leads To An Increase In Photochemical Smog: Research

Arpita SarkarJuly 8, 20220

Researchers at York University have discovered why reducing particulate pollution is actually increasing surface ozone pollution in some emerging economies, which is negatively affecting health, the ecosystem and agriculture. The results, published in Nature Geoscience, challenge established methods for tackling air pollution, the researchers say. Surface ozone is the main component of "fog" and is formed by chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). It occurs when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react to the presence of sunlight. In the last decade, when countries like China have improved air quality by reducing particulate pollution - which comes from coal, s...
