Netherlands Panics After Russia Cuts Off Pipelines: Groningen Remains On Thine Ice

The Groningen gas field in the Netherlands is one of the largest sources of natural gas in Western Europe. Housing 2,740 Billion cubic metres worth of natural gas has been a crucial tool for the Dutch post-World War II economy. Until January 2013, earthquakes of 3.6 on the Richter scale were recorded. After the suspicion of extraction being the cause of earthquakes in the Groningen region, it was decided to limit the extraction. By September 2016, the extraction had been listed at 21.6 billion m³. However, in October 2017, the Zerjip earthquake in Groningen was recorded as the third strongest in magnitude. The earthquakes have led to more than 16,0 000 damages claims to date.
