Power Grid Politics: Looking Deeply Into Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 23, 20220

The long-awaited Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 was tabled in Parliament (Lok Sabha) on August 8, 2022, despite opposition from political parties, employees, and engineers of state-run distribution companies. (DisComs). The bill was referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee for further feedback. The right side of the markets debate views this measure as a reformist solution to fix India's electrical system, which has suffered for four decades despite reforms owing to distribution companies' poor financial health, operational inefficiencies, and large AT&C losses. The economics and politics of India's 'grid' must be investigated to understand opposition to planned modifications to the Electricity Act 2003. The federal government and states control India's electrical bu...

Election 2024: Congress Needs To Find Sonia Gandhi’s Successor Soon To Be More Serious In Political Battle

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 22, 20220

The election of a new Congress president began yesterday, and if all goes according to plan, the party will choose Sonia Gandhi's successor by September 20. Many things have changed politically in the nation since she became president of Congress in 1998. Her leadership has previously kept up with the changes, but she has been unable to properly refashion it for a BJP-dominated political scene. The fact that Congress hasn't been able to win any state elections since Sonia became president for a second time in 2019 is indicative of this. After Rahul's disastrous 2019 election season, in which the BJP came dangerously near to matching the Congress party's 1989 vote total, she returned to her former post. Sad to say, Rahul's repeated expressions of apathy have dampened the party's call...

Since then, this innovation has skyrocketed and gained widespread interest. To date (2021), 97% of global tyre users have indicated trust in and optimism about the digital asset. As recently as a few years ago, even business schools showed little enthusiasm for incorporating cryptocurrency education into their curricula. They didn't think it was real and assumed the technology will go away soon. Despite the doubts, cryptocurrency study is being included in MBA programmes. Since 2013, the market for cryptocurrencies has grown by more than 90%, and there are now more than 4000 different kinds of cryp...

Arpita SarkarAugust 20, 20220

A study found that students in grades 2 and 8 in 22 Indian states struggled to learn during the Covid years, with Math and English the main casualties. The survey by the social organization Smile Foundation – and conducted between May and July 2022 – noted that more than 50 percent of students in these grades were unable to keep up and exhibited severe learning deficits. Students identified for the survey were those who had continued their studies despite all odds due to Covid-19. Five percent of them, or 2,464, were studied among the 48,000 students registered with the foundation who were in grades 2 through 8. More than 100 teachers, leaders of 10 non-governmental organizations, and 500 parents also participated in the survey. The survey found that 51 percent of Grade 2 stud...

Bilkis Convicts’ Remission Revives 2002 Memories For Gujarat Muslims; Read Full News!

Arpita SarkarAugust 20, 20220

All vehicular entrances to Naroda and Naroda Patiya were barricaded on Friday. Police presence in these areas of Ahmedabad, which saw the worst of the 2002 Gujarat riots, is usually associated with something ominous. But, on Friday, it was for a fun fair on the streets of Naroda, where children jumped on trampolines, a young girl walked on a tightrope mesmerizing onlookers, while adults bought various items from stalls set up on the pavement. Amid a raging controversy over the release of 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gang-rape case, life continued as normal in Naroda and Naroda Patia — where an armed mob of about 5,000 killed more than 97 people during the 2002 riots. Muslim families in the neighborhood were angered by the Gujarat government's decision to pardon 11 accus...

Sexual Harassment Complaint Invalid If Woman Wears ‘Provocative Dress’: Kerala Court

Arpita SarkarAugust 18, 20220

A court in Kozhikode, Kerala has said that a case of sexual harassment under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) will not stand prima facie if the woman is wearing "sexually provocative dresses." The Sessions Judge, S Krishna Kumar, observed that to attract the offense under Section 354, there must be some unwanted sexual advances but in the instant case, the complainant's photographs showed her "exposing herself in provocative dresses". The court said, "In order to attract this Section, there must be a physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures. There must be a demand or request for sexual favours. There must be sexually colored remarks. The photographs produced along with the bail application by the accused would reveal that defacto c...

Threats To Future Of Handloom Industry And Indian Heritage

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 18, 20220

English artisans resisted the widespread adoption of mechanisation at the turn of the nineteenth century out of concern that they would be rendered obsolete. This event is known as the Luddite uprising. Since then, handicrafts like weaving have been threatened by the rise of the machine age. Every Bengali child born in the 20th century has memorised Rabindranath Tagore's folk-rhyme "The house of the weaver, turned into the house of frogs; Eating, singing happily ever, The tadpoles of croaking frogs," which eloquently depicts the plight of the handloom weavers (Tanti in Bengali). The song describes how handlooms became extinct with the invention of the power loom. The weavers had given up their jobs. Due of the lack of handloom, their workplace has turned into a frog breeding ground. ...

Opposition Abandons All Hope Of Defeating Modi Almost Halfway To 2024

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 18, 20220

The present political opposition in India needs even a sliver of this famous quote to be successful. It's hard to discern whether the opposition's demise was due to ineptitude or the government's pro-people measures. Weak political opposition is bad for democracies, but in this instance, it's the opposition's lack of interest in the people. Speculation abounds over whether the opposition parties would challenge Mr. Modi and his party in 2024. The fact that this topic is being raised two years before the next general election shows the opposition parties' instability. They should respect voters' will. The concerns are more important because the BJP, despite being in office for eight years, continues to bat first, which the opposition should do. The opposition has corruption charge...

Arpita SarkarAugust 17, 20220

US President Joe Biden believes that for global peace, stability, and economic resilience India-US relations are essential. His top trade negotiator said that the two countries are now better positioned to work on tough issues. USTR (US Trade Representative) Katherine Tai said to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu at India House on Independence Day, "President Biden believes that the relationship between our two great democracies is essential to global peace, stability and economic resilience." India and the US face similar challenges as they move further into the 21st century. Tai said, "Well, the trade issues that I work on might be in the trickier basket of bilateral issues. I feel very, very positive about the trajectory that we are on. Our bilateral trade in goods and services is ...

It’s Maha Time: Next Important Test For BJP-Shinde Will Be Municipal Elections

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 17, 20220

It took six weeks of discussions, but the BJP has secured crucial positions in Maharashtra's newly expanded government. Though nine ministers were sworn in from both parties, the BJP has received the more prestigious ministries due to its larger majority in the legislature. Devendra Fadnavis, the state of Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, is a strong figure in the state's government. As most of the BJP's portfolios were handled by NCP and Congress in the MVA government, the 40-MLA Eknath Shinde faction might take solace in the fact that a certain equilibrium continues. However, the Shiv Sena has been weakened and fractured as a result of their continued time in office. There will be grumbling even within the BJP, as most ministers have been given far smaller portfolios than th...

Economy, Corruption, Politics And The Path Towards New India

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 17, 20220

Recent weeks have demonstrated how "family first," "corruption first," and "freebies first" policies have wreaked havoc on economies in and around India, most notably Sri Lanka. Without naming any one state, political party, or individual, Prime Minister Modi sounded a note of caution about the dangers of populism and quick fixes in politics. In the past, many notable people and organizations, including the United States Supreme Court, have offered their thoughts on this topic. Instead of a "free for all" approach, which is unfair to the most deprived and perhaps nothing more than a gimmick because usually such schemes can never be implemented or sustained for a long time, any competent administrator would support the idea of ensuring that his or her government ensures targeted, foolpro...

India’s ‘Salaried Class’ Shrinks By 2.7 Percentage During Pandemic: Survey

Arpita SarkarAugust 16, 20220

There is much to lament in India's post-Covid job market, where recovery has been painfully slow. However, official data suggests that in the salaried sector, the participation of religious minorities – Muslims, Sikhs,, and Christians, in that order – has been most severely affected. The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation's latest PLFS (Periodic Labor Force Survey) – which covers the period from July 2020 to June 2021 and was released earlier this year – at least partially captures the impact of the lockdown, and its immediate aftermath, on salaried jobs across the sector. The survey defined regular/salaried employees as a person who has worked in another's farm or non-farm enterprise (both household and non-household) and, in return, has received salary or wages o...
