New Vice President, Old Politics: How Can Opposition Defeat BJP?

Sayani ChakrabortyAugust 8, 20220

Jagdeep Dhankhar's emphatic win in the vice-presidential elections is another indication of the BJP's supremacy in national politics. BJD and YSRCP, two "neutral" regional parties, were more likely to vote for Dhankhar than disenchanted opposition parties. In presidential and vice-presidential elections, the national ruling party always has an advantage in capturing votes from parties that are not completely aligned with it. Regional parties understand that a vote against the Centre isn't worth the effort of antagonising these two positions, which have little political value. But the near-disaster of the monsoon session should prompt the BJP to rethink its strategy. Legislators will always have dissenting views, regardless of who is in charge. In parliamentary politics, legislation,...

Maha Politics: BJP’s Move To Make Shinde CM Is More Troubling To Uddhav Than His Resignation

Sayani ChakrabortyJuly 1, 20220

The BJP showed its tactical prowess by appointing Eknath Shinde as Maharashtra CM. The BJP's mistake in 2019 was to play the position of a big brother too aggressively, and that cost them, Shiv Sena, as a partner. With Devendra Fadnavis as Shinde's deputy, the larger Sena group has returned to the NDA with a courteous re-entry. Having a Maratha Sainik as the CM would lessen the sting of the charges of treachery levelled by Thackeray's father and son. Furthermore, deputy CM Shinde has a higher chance of wooing supporters of the Uddhav faction than CM Shinde. Shinde, in contrast to Uddhav, may be less difficult for BJP to deal with since he never forgave the party for lowering Sena to its junior partner. The CM is Shinde, although the BJP is expected to retain a large number of critic...

Uddhav Thackeray Resigns: Shinde-BJP Wins This Round, Further Political Change Anticipated

Sayani ChakrabortyJune 30, 20220

After Maharashtra governor BS Koshyari ordered the MVA administration to establish its majority, it hurried to the Supreme Court yesterday. Uddhav Thackeray has been forced to resign as chief minister after the Supreme Court supported the integrity of the floor test and refused to allow any additional postponement. Disqualification notifications for Shiv Sena rebels should have been sent on July 12 to 16, rather than July 12 to 16. There had been concerns that the floor test might be delayed as a result. To cut through the haze of competing claims and counterclaims, the use of trust motions has proven effective throughout the years. Ten days have passed since the last episode of Shiv Sena's internal squabbles. Prolonging the chaos served no purpose for the general people. Delays would h...

Punjab By-Election: S S Mann’s Victory Is Worrisome; Not Because AAP’s Losing Shine

Sayani ChakrabortyJune 28, 20220

The results of a single Lok Sabha by-election are seldom sufficient to draw broad generalisations. That being said, SS Mann's Sangrur triumph for Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is exceptional enough to be the outlier. Mann, a politician commonly regarded as "extreme", has beat the odds and defeated AAP with 35.6% of the vote share. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann has held the Sangrur constituency in the previous two Parliamentary elections. Candidates from the SAD, Congress and BJP, three long-time administrators of Punjab, all forfeited their deposits. Mann's success may be attributed to a growing dissatisfaction with the AAP. However, it is vital to situate his victory in the context of SAD's decline and the tumultuous nature of Punjab. Politics and Sikhism go hand in hand in the SAD. In 1996, ...

The report claims that 6% of women have been sexually abused at some point. Health Minister Mansukh Mandabia released the report last Thursday. Phys...

Pandemic Lowered Young People’s Faith In Many Governments: International Monetary Fund

Arpita SarkarMay 7, 20220

The experience of the Pandemic around the world has shaken the confidence of the youth in the government. "The results of the COVID epidemic, which researchers have been saying so far from a survey of historical epidemics, have been substantiated," said International Monetary Fund (IMF). The survey however did not say which countries' youth communities were most affected. Prior to COVID, the Treasury team came to this conclusion after combining the experience of the survey with the project on the relevant subject in 140 countries till 2018. According to the survey, those who are between the ages of 18 and 25 who have witnessed the outbreak of COVID have lost faith in the government the most. However, the survey also found that in countries where government policy is generally bel...

Indian Railways To Reform Their Bomb Squad Department!

Arpita SarkarMay 6, 20220

As Maoist activity increased in neighbouring states, including West Bengal, bomb squads were formed at four branches of the Eastern Railway for the safety of railway passengers. Allegedly, Eastern Railway dismantled the bomb squad in 2020 without the permission of the Railway Board. 65 trained workers working in those four branches were transferred. As a result of not using it for a long time, valuable equipment for identifying and deactivating bombs worth Rs. 20 crore is wasted. Due to the recent rise in Maoist activities in the neighbouring state, the Railway Board has written a letter to the state asking for the cancellation of all transfer orders and was also instructed to form a bomb squad again. After that, the officials of Eastern Railway started working. Param Shiv,...

War in Ukraine crushed Sri Lanka’s economy

Our CorrespondentMarch 21, 20220

Russia's war in Ukraine has shocked the world and badly affected the global economy. Sri Lanka is currently facing its worst economic crisis since the country gained independence in 1948. Sri Lanka, hit by rising oil import costs and declining tourism revenues, is racing to avert a default amid dwindling foreign exchange holdings. Inflation is already the worst in Asia at 15%, with the conflict only making it harder for the tropical island off the southern tip of India. Fuel shortages and blackouts lasting up to seven hours have become a daily routine, while waits become longer at gas stations where prices have risen nearly 50% this month.   Officials are struggling to cope with the crisis. They have raised interest rates, devalued the local currency, and curbed...

Our CorrespondentMarch 21, 20220

The IMF intends to begin discussions with Sri Lanka on a program to support the country. Spokesman Gerry Rice said the island was facing heavy currency depreciation and inflation after an unusual battle of printing money to keep interest rates low.   President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in a national address on Wednesday that he has permitted the IMF program to go ahead after meeting senior staff of the lender in Colombo. Officials have also indicated that they are actively considering an IMF-backed program," said IMF spokesman Gerry Rice.   During the Finance Minister's visit to Washington in April, we will discuss with officials how best we can help Sri Lanka move forward. The IMF has already called for tighter monetary policy to prevent liquidity injections ...
