Gunjan ChaudharyDecember 4, 20210

Questions are constantly being raised about the leadership of the opposition in the politics of the country. While TMC is staking claim in this political battle, Congress is citing itself to be the single largest party. Now the reaction of election strategist Prashant Kishor has also come to the fore. It Needs More Than MSP To Revitalize Agriculture!

Abhay ChauhanDecember 1, 20210

In a televised address on 19 November 2021, Prime Minister Modi announced repealing of the three contentious farm laws, an issue that divided the nation for year long. Despite the government's commitment farmers are digging in their tents to brace for the coming winter months and to continue to sit in protest to get their remaining six demands fulfilled, including, most importantly, a statutory backing for the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The tug-of-war continues but unlike the repeal of farm laws, legalising MSP will not be so easy. What is MSP and why are farmers demanding a law backing it?The history of MSP can be traced in the rationing system introduced by the British during the second world war. But it was in independent India, that it became a tool to address the issue of food...

The Indispensability Of Jinnah To Hindutva Politics

Abhay ChauhanDecember 1, 20210

There is no denying the fact that the standards of Indian public debate are on a slide, especially in the last decade. Pakistan and it's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah is a common theme of debate on prime time television shows, an issue that features over and above other electoral issues. This exclusive focus on Pakistan and Jinnah is a result of decades of careful nurturing of a cadre of people who espouse muscular nationalism based on the argument that a Hindu Rashtra can only be an alternative to Muslim Jihad. The majority who happens to be Hindu is presented as holding the secular flag high; otherwise, India could have potentially turned into a theocracy. It serves two purposes, that the Hindus are temperamentally more tolerant and secular and that Muslims are temperamentally religious-...

Abhay ChauhanDecember 1, 20210

On the first day of the winter session, parliament began on the same note as it has ended on the 11th of August 2021 with one difference. On Monday, 12 MPs from various opposition parties were suspended for their unruly behaviour during the monsoon session of the Rajya Sabha. The unruly scenes in the Rajya Sabha, in the monsoon session, brought the chairman of the Rajya Sabha to tears, in anguish and desperation he said "there is no act to convey my anguish as I have spent a sleepless night... I struggled to find our provocation,” referring to unruly members of the house. As this happened on the last working day of the house, it was logical to expect that the decision on the MPs conduct will be taken up in the upcoming winter session. A scene of disruption in Parliament The motion...

Indian Democracy Counting The Errors!

Sayani ChakrabortyNovember 29, 20210

The Agricultural Laws Repeal Bill, 2021, was approved by the Union Cabinet in a recent meeting after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement on November 19, 2021, that the three unpopular farm laws will be repealed. Many were surprised by the Prime Minister's declaration, especially many in the governing dispensation who had previously opposed the farmers' demonstrations tooth and claw, resorting to abhorrent name-calling at times. However, the retreat is a good step after long demonstrations that saw more than 700 farmers die and many more endure severe pain and risk from an antagonistic administration, bad weather, and a pandemic. According to the letter sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the three laws would not be abolished in Parliament un...

Ranging from irate, to sad, to downright funny there was an entire range of emotions and outbursts on full and unrestrained display. Somewhere in the midst of all that internet and soc...
