The Aam Aadmi Party announced that it will stage a nonviolent demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in opposition to the rising abuse of women in Manipur. On Tuesday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will hold a demonstration in Delhi to draw attention to the conflict-torn state of Manipur. According to PTI, the party said that it would stage a demonstration in response to alleged acts of violence against women in the northeastern state. A demonstration will be held in Jantar Mantar.

“The Aam Aadmi Party will hold a peaceful protest at 4 pm on Tuesday at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against the increasing violence and brutality against women in Manipur. All friends are appealed to reach Jantar Mantar at 4 pm,” Gopal Rai, the Delhi state convenor for the AAP, stated in a Hindi tweet. Since May 3, when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 160 people have died and several others have been injured as a result of ethnic violence in Manipur.

The majority of Manipur’s population, the Meiteis, reside in the Imphal valley, making up around 53% of the state’s total population. Tribal people, including the Nagas and Kukis, make up 40% of the population and are primarily found in the hill districts. Prior to her arrival, Swati Paliwal, chair of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), traveled to the region-racked state.

Since May 3, ethnic violence has been rife in Manipur. In the conflict between the Meitei and indigenous tribes in the state, more than 130 people have died and many have been displaced. Religious sites have been vandalized, homes have been set on fire, and even businesses connected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), like the residences of party leaders and ministers, have come under attack.  Maliwal claimed that after arriving in Manipur, she had requested a meeting with the chief minister, N Biren Singh.  She added that she would like to speak with sexual assault victims and find out if they have received compensation, counseling, or legal assistance. Maliwal encouraged Smriti Zubin Irani, the minister for women’s and children’s development, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to travel to Manipur.
