There is no effective treatment for dementia but identifying ways to reduce or prevent dementia will help reduce the burden of the disease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154705 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem1-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem1-450x311.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The research appears to be led by Wei Cheng, PhD, Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence, Fudan University, Shanghai, China, and Jin-Tai Yu, MD, PhD, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University. It appears in Biological Psychiatry. The study is published by Elsevier.<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies examining whether depression therapies such as pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy can reduce the risk of dementia have produced mixed results, leaving the question unresolved.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"plag_find active\" data-countername=\"plag_match_counter1\">Professor Yu said, &#8220;Older individuals appear to experience different depression patterns over time.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"plag_find\" data-countername=\"plag_match_counter2\">Therefore, intra-individual variability in symptoms might confer different risks of dementia as well as heterogeneity in the effectiveness of depression treatment in relation to dementia prevention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To address that heterogeneity, the researchers then classified participants into one of four courses of depression: the progressive course, in which mild initial symptoms gradually increase; decreasing, starting with moderate- or high-intensity symptoms but subsequently decreasing; Chronically high course of ongoing severe depressive symptoms; and chronically low courses, where symptoms of mild or moderate depression persist consistently.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154703 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem2-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.caravanalive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dem2-450x311.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As expected, the study found that depression increased the risk of dementia \u2013 by a significant 51% compared to non-depressed participants. However, the degree of risk depends on the course of the depression; Those with increasing, chronically high, or chronically low course depression were at higher risk for dementia. On the other hand, those with the decreasing course were not at greater risk than participants without depression.<\/p>\n<p>Biological Psychiatry editor John Krystal, MD.\u00a0<span class=\"plag_find\" data-countername=\"plag_match_counter4\">He said, &#8220;Once again, the course of ineffectively treated depression carries significant medical risk.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"plag_find\" data-countername=\"plag_match_counter3\">in this case, symptomatic depression increases dementia risk by 51%, whereas treatment was associated with a significant reduction in this risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"plag_find\" data-countername=\"plag_match_counter5\">&#8220;This indicates that timely treatment of depression is needed among those with late-life depression.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"plag_find\" data-countername=\"plag_match_counter6\">Providing depression treatment for those with late-life depression might not only remit affective symptoms but also postpone the onset of dementia,&#8221; added Professor Cheng.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An increased risk of dementia has long been associated with depression, and now a new study provides evidence that, in some patient populations, prompt treatment of depression can reduce the risk of dementia.
