Priya Saroj in Parliament on Kashi Dwar, Pindra
The Kashi Dwar is a township plan for the Pindra Gram Sabha. The Pindra Gram Sabha constitutes 10 surrounding villages of the Machhlishahr parliamentary constituency. This township plan is being conducted under the Uttar Pradesh Housing Development Council.
For this, the Development Council proposed to acquire 900 acres of land. To protest this acquisition, the farmers of the area conducted a sit-in-protest (dharna). When this matter was raised in the Parliament, the government postponed the scheme for time being.
Priya Saroj mentioned the pleas of the farmers about the “Ban on Sale and Purchase of land”. She said, “These lands are the only source of income for the farmers, it’s their property. On occasions such as their daughter’s marriage, they usually sell small pieces of the land.”
In the last two years, the ban has made their financial situation worse. Priya talked about how the ban should be lifted and Kashi Dwar should be made somewhere else, and not Pindra.
Amul Plant Banaras, Karkhiyan
The Amul Plant came with a lot of hopes for the people, but unfortunately their hopes are not fulfilled. The land belongs to people of Uttar Pradesh, but the major jobs are being captured by people from Gujarat. Priya talked about giving priority to local people, as Karkhiyan is the village where she was born.
She asked the contractors not to harass the local labourers. She also talked about certain environmental hazards. She asked the authorities to make sure that the toxic water should not be drained into the farmer’s field.
