Nilambur Assembly By-Election, Chandy Oommen’s Optimism
The results of the Nilambur Assembly By-election were released on 23rd of June 2025. UDF’s contestant Aryadan Shoukath, secured a decisive victory defeating LDF’s MS Swaraj by over 11,000 votes.
This became a major win for UDF, Kerala. Congress MLA Chandy Oommen interpreted this win as a reflection of strengthened anti-incumbency in Kerala. He expressed his optimism about UDF’s return to the state with even more power. He thanked the people in this election, for their citing unity and voter’s support.
Advocate J.S. Akhil says, Chandy Oommen activities in Nilambur consisted of an emotional door-to-door campaign. He visited a total of 3000 houses, conversed with the people, and asked about the issues of the district. Akhil calls him a public servant who is modelled by the work and selfless service for the people.
Chandy Oommen presided over the ceremony of dedicating various development works on the land of Pampady on 22nd June 2025. The developed works are majorly dedicated to Pampady Government Taluk Hospital.
On 22nd June 2025, Chandy Oommen spoke as a Chairperson at the construction meeting of Ayarkunnam Smart Village. This is a great initiative taken towards setting up a great system at the local levels. It comes under Mahatma Gandhi’s envisioned concept of a Smart Village. This will become an ideal village – which will be a complete republic and independent of its neighbours for its vital daily needs. This will ensure that every village must ensure that it grows its own food, milk and vegetables for the fellow villagers.
About Chandy Oommen
Chandy Oommen, 39, the son of late Oommen Chandy, Kerala’s two-times Chief Minister, entered the lanes of politics in the year 2023. Chandy Oommen is a young advocate born on 1st March, 1986.
He has persuaded his graduation from BA in Economics (Mar Ivanios College.), BA Hons & MA in History (St. Stephen’s College, DU), LLB (DU), LLM in Criminology (NLU Delhi), and further LLM in Constitutional Law (Christ University, Bengaluru).
He practises law at the Supreme Court since 2016 and also works as an adjunct law lecturer in Noida and Delhi.
He entered mainstream politics in the year 2023, in September 2023’s by-election. He won the election and was elected from Puthuppally, succeeding his father with a record margin of 37,719 votes even higher than his father’s previous record margin of 33,255.
Even as a student, he held the position of a Secretary in the Indian Youth Congress and later as a Chairman of the National Outreach Cell (2022-2024). He even participated in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, a barefoot walk in late 2022.
He is continuing the grassroots legacy of his father such as visiting homes, responds to constituents, and is actively hands-on in the region. He focuses on youth outreach, as chairman of the Indian Youth Congress’s outreach cell, he worked to engage young voters and volunteers across India. As an advocate, he represents Kerala in legal matters: appointed as an empanelled advocate for the National Highways Authority of India in Kerala courts since Sept 2024.
Chandy Oommen is emerging as a prominent young leader in the Kerala Congress, leveraging his legal expertise, educational background, and grassroots appeal. With his growing visibility and trust in Puthuppally, he’s likely to play a key role in Kerala politics going forward.
