One of the most prestigious awards for excellence in Television- the ‘Emmy Awards’ is ready with its nominations for 2018.

While HBO had been dominating the nominations for the past 17 years, this year it was Netflix which got the maximum nominations. The online streaming service surpassed HBO by 4 nominations. This achievement, according to many, is an indicator of the fact that the number of people who prefer streaming their favourite shows than watching it on TV is increasing day by day.

A significant number of nominees in the acting category are people of colour including Sterling K. Brown of This Is Us, Jeffrey Wright and Thandie Newton of Westworld, Issa Rae of Insecure, Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson of Black-ish, Donald Glover, Brian Tyree Henry, and Zazie Beetz of Atlanta, Leslie Jones and Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live.

Sarah Oh of Killing Eve made history by becoming the first woman of Asian descent to receive a nomination in the ‘lead actress in a drama’ category.

HBO hit series Game of Thrones received the maximum nomination- a whopping total of 22; followed by Saturday Night Live and The Handmaid’s Tale.

The five of the drama series nominations are exactly the same as last year: The Handmaid’s TaleWestworldThe CrownThis is Us and Stranger Things. The two that didn’t repeat, Better Call Saul and House of Cards, were both ineligible.

On the comedy side, there are four repeats from last year: Silicon ValleyUnbreakable Kimmy SchmidtBlack-ish, and Atlanta with additional nominees Curb Your EnthusiasmBarry – HBO’s very dark comedy about a hit man starring Bill Hader; The Marvelous Mrs Maisel from Amazon; and GLOW from Netflix. In a surprising turn of events, Modern Family which has been nominated 8 times and won 5 times did not get a nomination this year.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che will host the ceremony.
