Sony TV’s controversial show Pehredaar Piya Ki that has been constant in news since its very inception is going off air. The decision to scrap the show was a last minute call taken collectively by the channel and the makers. As per the directive of BCCC (The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council), the show’s prime time slot of 8:30 pm was to undergo a change to 10:30 pm Monday onwards.
A source close to the channel told us, “The decision was taken on Monday morning. Sony felt that it would not work on the 10 or 10.30 pm slot, which takes away the core audience. The show does not have ‘adult content’ per se and the channel runs the gritty Crime Patrol at 10.30 pm. That show has a loyal fan base. Pehredaar Piya Ki was a prime-time show and the channel has other shows in the pipeline for the 10pm slot.” It is no secret that Sony is known to end shows quite fast. Rashmi Sharma’s non-performing Jaat Ki Jugni did not last for three months. Even Moh Moh Ke Dhaage and Peshwa Bajirao have closed down. The source further informed, “While the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) did not interfere at all post the change in time slot, the channel honchos were under a lot of pressure from Smriti Irani. It was becoming too much to handle.”
In this serial it’s showed that the marriage of a 9-year-old prince Ratan with an 18-year-old girl came under the scanner after it showed a first night sequence and a honeymoon sequence between the kid and the teenager. An online petition addressed to I& B minister Smriti Irani was filed on change.org thereafter asking for a ban on the show.
The makers of the show Shashi and Sumeet Mittal vehemently defended their show saying it’s progressive and they are proud of their show in an interview to news channel. They also organised a press conference in Mumbai defending their show.
