Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee is set to rule 4 out of 7 civic bodies in West Bengal. As the result came out of the civic body elections held on 14 May, the ruling party in the state - TMC won majority of municipal wards in Domkal, Mirik, Pujali and Raiganj. Rest 3 civic bodies – Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong were won back by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), an ally of BJP in this election.

Domkal, Pujali and Raiganj seats belong to plain areas while Mirik is located in hills. This is why the Mirik victory is seen very special for Mamata Banerjee.

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha did a good performance in its forte, like Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong in the hilly region of the state. GJM holds a grip over hilly area population, demanding for Gorkhaland, a separate state from West Bengal.

One year before, TMC had won 211 out of 294 seats in the assembly election and the opposition – CPM and Congress did a very poor performance. Their poor performance hasn’t improved in civic bodies elections too.
