FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World cup 2018 commenced on 14 June 2018 and has got football fans all around the world hooked to their TV screens religiously watching the matches.

Fans from around the globe are flocking to Russia, where the World Cup’18 is being hosted, to support and cheer for their favourite teams in the stadiums.

 

 

Coming once every 4 years, FIFA world cup is the most prestigious and awaited football association tournament which arouses excitement amongst football fans and spreads a cheerful vibe around the world. And the world cup this year is proving to be the year of the underdogs.

This is the first world cup to be held in Eastern Europe. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities.

This year the quadrennial football tournament saw two teams making their debut and two other teams featuring in the world cup after more than 20 years at the same time.

 

DEBUTANT TEAMS

  • ICELAND

The national football team of Iceland after gaining much popularity in these recent years has finally made it to the FIFA world cup 2018. With a population of just 3.34 lakhs, Iceland has become the smallest nation by population to ever compete in the world cup. The Icelandic team has Heimir Hallgrímsson as its manager and is currently ranked 22nd.

Iceland is placed in group D along with Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia. It has only played one match till date, against Argentina and the team scored a draw (1-1).

After a spectacular performance in the European Cup 2016, where Iceland reached the quarterfinals but lost to France, it’s time now for the Icelandic team to prove itself in the world cup.

 

  • PANAMA-

Panama has made it to the finals of the FIFA world cup for the first after 12 years of being in the qualifying campaigns, proving that they are determined and more than that persistent.

Panama is placed in Group E along with England, Belgium and Tunisia.

The national football team of Panama currently ranked 55th, is up for establishing its name at a global level.

 

 

COMEBACK TEAMS

  • EGYPT

Playing in the world cup for the third time, Egypt has made its comeback after 28 years.

The last time that the Egyptian team was in the finals was in 1990.

The team has been placed in group A along Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and the host team Russia. In its previous appearances, the Egyptian team could not manage to get past the group stages, but with its return this year we hope to see them in the finals.

 

  • PERU

Returning back to the world cup after a long gap of 36 years, National team of Peru hopes to shine this year and leave its mark.

After winning the intensely competitive qualifiers, Peru booked its birth and landed in Russia.

Peru currently stands at a rank and has been placed in group C along with France, Denmark and Australia.
