Priyanka Chopra is soon returning to India after wrapping up the third, very controversial, season of Quantico, her movies A Kid Like Jake and Isn’t It Romantic? Now when she is finally coming back, she wants to settle for nothing less than she deserves. If a report in Mid Day is to be believed, Priyanka’s team has demanded Rs 12 crore as her renumeration fee for Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bharat, which is her Bollywood comeback opposite Salman Khan. This is the same amount Deepika Padukone was paid to play the lead role in Padmaavat. Reportedly, Deepika was paid more than her male co-stars, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.

Deepika and Priyanka are two actors who have been vocal about the need for pay parity. In an earlier interview, she had said, “I think gender pay gap is a global problem. It exists in every profession, be it Hollywood, Bollywood or the business sector where males are paid more than females. I feel it’s a big problem and is not just confined to the film industry. My appearance on the top 10 list Forbes 100 celebrity list highlights the same problem.” In an interview to BBC she said that she does not like being paid ‘less than the boys’ and that that she was once offered 5% of what was being paid to her male co-star.

Deepika Padukone has also raised concern towards pay equality. She once said, “If you comparing our pay scale with the men, then yes it is very less. If you are comparing what girls used to get before and what they are getting in the last one or two years then I can say that there has been a major shift and we are hoping and trying. But this is not a war.”

Ali Abbas Zafar had said in a statement that Priyanka’s character was the “soul” of Bharat. “Bharat is a mature, subtle love story and her character is the soul of the film. She stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Salman in his journey and is the catalyst who triggers what will be a turning point in the plot,” he had said.

Bharat is the remake of the South Korean film Ode to my Father. The film will focus on partition and will be shot in Mumbai, Punjab, Delhi and Abu Dhabi. The film will hit the screens on Eid 2019.
