After the very recent Harvey Weinstein sexual assault case, a lot of Hollywood celebrities stood up to speak in open, about the issue of sexual harassment that men and women face in the entertainment industry. While all the other celebrities of the tinsel town kept mum on this, there was only one Bollywood celebrity who chose to join the brigade, by talking about her horrific experience with sexual harassment in the Bollywood industry. And that Bollywood celebrity is none other than the very bold Swara Bhaskar.
In a recent interview with an esteemed national daily, Swara opened up about her sexual harassment case in Bollywood industry. She explained how she was harassed by a drunk filmmaker on a film’s sets. When Swara was asked if she had ever personally come across a sexual harassment case in Bollywood, she agreed and said, “Of course. I’ve been propositioned by men who were in a position to cast me. I lost a few roles because I didn’t give in. It made me vulnerable, nervous. Some people even stopped responding to my messages because they knew I would not give in. Being an articulate, educated girl they sensed that I would not take things lying down.”
Revealing about her experience with sexual harassment at the hands of a filmmaker during her early days as an actor, the “Anaarkali of Aarah” actress further added saying, “There have been catcalls during shoots and eve-teasing on one of my sets. I’ve been groped by a mob during promotions and during a 56-day outdoor at a remote location, when I was still fairly new, the director harassed me with texts and dinner invites. He stalked me during the day and called me through the night. I was asked to go to his hotel room on the pretext of discussing the scene and would find him drinking. During the first week itself, he started talking about love and sex and one night, arrived in my room, drunk, and asked to be hugged. It was scary! I was young and alone. I would switch off the lights after pack-up and remove my make up in the dark so he would think I was asleep and stop calling me.”
After it was getting too worse for Swara she finally told the director that he was scaring her and making her uncomfortable and that she wouldn’t be able to act if this continued. This did stop the harassment, but not for long. He again started with his dirty tricks. However, this time Swara couldn’t take it anymore and finally confided in the executive producer and made sure that she was escorted everywhere.
Concluding her interview, Swara made a genuine point and said, “Lose the part but don’t get on the couch.”
On the work front, Swara will next be seen in her upcoming film, “Veere Di Wedding” with co-stars like Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. The film is scheduled to release on May 18, 2018.
